Alan Bernadin Lynn Ma was born in Canton, China in 1941. He remembers going to school during World War II, when food was scarce. His family was poor and eventually they were forced to leave China because of the war.

Despite growing up in a difficult environment due to poverty and racism, Alan persevered and obtained a degree in mathematics from Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania. After graduation, he worked as a statistician for the RAND Corporation for a number of years before moving on to pursue a career in mathematics education.
